The universe is waiting to see what you’ll do next.

Whether they are too big or too small, too early or too late, awkward or terrifying, we set our callings down for years at a time in pursuit of something more practical.

We earn money, raise families, solve problems, and become good representatives of whatever groups we belong to. We hide behind identities that are easy to explain, walk paths that are well-defined, and do work that “makes sense.”

But there’s a voice inside that whispers, “That’s not me. I know what I really am.” It says, “Pay attention to this thing over here, this thing that seems pointless. This is what really matters.”

These are what I mean when I say, “Callings”: these esoteric desires for something specific, regardless of its practical import or transactional value on the open market - these are the universe noticing something about itself. Through you.

Whatever it is that animates you - the local manifestation of the universe, the soul, atman, the self-aware pattern that has developed using your DNA and your experiences as its raw materials - cares about this thing.

It resents the demands that pull it away, leaving the thing unnoticed, unremarked: The poem unwritten, the cat unpetted, the huge project unresourced.

And it comes back again and again, asking you to find something out.
